8 great places to take a selfie in Scottsdale

Scottsdale recently was named the No. 1 city in the nation for taking a selfie — those photos of yourself (often with a friend or two standing close), that you take yourself.

The Internet people-finding search site, mylife.com, cited the natural beauty around the city as the main reason for the nod. With that in mind, we offer a few suggestions for the best places around Scottsdale to take a selfie. We know this isn’t a complete list by any means, so we invite you to send us your own suggestion, preferably with a selfie taken there. You can e-mail it to chris.coppola@arizonarepublic.com or tweet them using the hashtag #ScottsdaleSelfie.

1) The LOVE sculpture. The iconic pop art image by American artist Robert Indiana is hard to miss if you’re walking between Scottsdale City Hall and the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts on Scottsdale Mall. If you want your selfie to project romance, this piece says it all.

2) Anywhere that Camelback Mountain is in the backdrop. Scottsdale has a nice view of the famed Valley landmark, which lies just west of the city. A striking urban mountain always makes for a nice photo. (Located between Camelback Road and McDonald Drive, west of 64th Street).

3) Scottsdale Preserve trails. You’ll get your fill of mountain backdrops here as well. There are numerous trails around the sprawling preserve, but the easiest place to start for a quick selfie is the Gateway Trail at 18333 N Thompson Peak Pkwy.

4) In front of the ropin’ cowboy sign. Head to the entrance of Main Street in downtown Scottsdale, on the east side of Scottsdale Road, and you’ll see this famous sign welcoming tenderfoots from around the world to Old Town Scottsdale.

5) At the Herb Drinkwater statue on the Scottsdale Mall. Located in front of City Hall, the statue depicts the most beloved mayor in the city’s history. The smiling mayor has his left arm extended for you to slip under in true selfie style.

6) Southbridge, located southwest of Scottsdale and Camelback Roads. The bridge spans the Arizona Canal and has become a popular gathering spot for visitors and locals alike.

7) The five silver horse sculptures along the Indian Bend Wash. Located between Hayden and Scottsdale Roads on the north side of Indian Bend Road, this public artwork is not only striking, but functional. If you catch it when water is flowing through the wash, they are designed to spray water through the nostrils of the horses.

8) In front of Scottsdale Stadium. This works especially well in March when the Cactus League spring training season is taking place, but anytime of year makes for a cool shot. The stadium, located at the northeast corner of Osborn Road and Drinkwater Boulevard, is the spring training home of the San Francisco Giants.
