Scottsdale gallery hosts auction at polo championships

Scottsdale’s Larsen Gallery is bringing art to the people on a polo field to create a buzz for its annual auction.

More than 200 paintings and sculptures, many from recognizable artists, will be on site at the Bentley Scottsdale Polo Championships: Horses Horsepower. The auction is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale.

The gallery has been in Scottsdale for 20 years and is in the secondary art market, meaning it primarily consigns works by established contemporary artists for resale.

But owners Scott and Polly Larsen always are looking for new collectors and ways to reach younger and diverse crowds.

“One reason we’re moving the auction to WestWorld was the space constraints we have at the gallery,” Scott Larsen said. “Another reason is we thought it would be a pretty good fit. We felt last year … the money spent on advertising and marketing was a good way to promote the event. We feel that partnering with polo will be an extension of that.”

The polo championship matches are Oct. 25 and 26 at WestWorld. Beyond its all-star polo matches, the event hosts a canine couture fashion show, a regional contest of the World Food Championships and more than 200 cars featured by the Arizona Porsche Concours d’Elegance, Ferrari and Lamborghini clubs.

The Larsen piece expected to auction for the most money is “The Evening Camp” by artist Eanger Irving Couse. The piece could be sold for as much as $200,000. Other noted artists include Keith Haring, Fritz Scholder and Ralph Goings.

The gallery also offers more than 80 pieces that could auction for $1,000 or less.

Polly Larsen said the auction experience should not intimidate the uninitiated. People can roam the WestWorld grounds and then circle back when the piece of art they are interested is up for auction.

“An auction ebbs and flows but this will definitely be a more exciting experience,” said Polly Larsen.
