11/15-16: The Lodge in Scottsdale to close; final parties this weekend

After six years, Aaron May’s the Lodge in Scottsdale will close after two final bashes this weekend.

May said the landlord has been looking to sell to condo developers for a while, and finally made a settlement. The chef and owner believes the venue will be torn down in 30 days.

“Anxious is the best word I can use right now,” May said. “It was a really good run, and we made a lot of great memories, had great customers and employees. It’s bittersweet.”

The restaurant and bar opened in 2008, inspired by a trip to northern Wisconsin that May took with business partner Quinn Goldsberry. The name says it all — the club has a log-cabin feel, larger-than-life wood Sasquatches, taxidermy animals, a fireplace, cozy booths and plenty of wood accents throughout.

Chef May’s signature comfort dishes include the massive Sasquatch Burger, which substitutes grilled-cheese sandwiches for the bun, and white Cheddar cheese curds.

The Lodge added a laid-back vibe to the glitz of downtown Scottsdale’s nightclubs, where partiers enjoyed craft beers, beanbag toss on the patio and conversation. Arizonans could picture themselves back in the Midwest or skiing in the mountains when they walked into the bar.

“Six years ago, there was nothing really like the Lodge around here,” May said. “There was no where to get a good hamburger and a beer. Old Town was full of shiny shirts and gelled hair…now a lot of those places have been traded in for bars that sell hamburgers and beer.”

The Lodge is calling its last two parties La Adios Fiesta. Justin Hopkins, a finalist on Season Two of “The Voice,” will perform on Saturday night and Country Music Award winner James Otto takes the stage Sunday night. Part of the proceeds from the weekend will benefit Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors.

May and Goldsberry are working now on opening casual seafood spot the Yacht Club, which opens Dec. 12 in Arcadia. They also purchased Shotgun Betty’s in Scottsdale, and will run the bar as usual before closing to turn it into a new concept called Good Wood Tavern. More details to come on both projects.

Details: Bar open 11 am.-2 a.m. Parties start at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, when the main acts go on. The Lodge, 4422 N. 75th St., Scottsdale. Free. 480-945-0828, lodgescottsdale.com.
