13 days of holiday cheer in Scottsdale, Carefree, Phoenix

Magical, musical and the spectacle of the holidays can be found with more than a dozen events in the Northeast Valley.

From plays to pet parades and a host of lights displays, the December arts and events lineup assure that the desert isn’t devoid of merriment, or even snow.

Here are 13 events to add cheer to the holiday season.

Talking Stick Holiday Light Tour, Dec. 1-Dec. 24

If you can’t get your fill of holiday lights, take the Talking Stick Trolley tour that winds through the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Scottsdale, North Scottsdale and North Phoenix. The 6:30 p.m.tour is 21/2 hours every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday through Christmas Eve. Tickets start are $30. Details: talkingstickarizona.com.

Scottsdale Holiday ArtWalk, Dec. 4

Scottsdale’s annual Holiday ArtWalk offers hundreds of one-of-a-kind art pieces to fit a range of budgets. From 7 to 9 p.m., galleries host artist demonstrations and promotions along the arts district walk, which extends along Main Street west of Scottsdale Road and on Marshall Way north of Indian School Road to Fifth Avenue. “A Christmas Carol, The Musical,” Dec. 5-21

Fountain Hills Theater wraps the spirit of the season in original melodies with a musical adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.” The tale of miser Ebenezer Scrooge follows him through a series of strange and magical journeys to discover the true spirit of the holiday season. Shows continues through Dec. 21 on the Mainstage, 11445 N. Saguaro Blvd., Fountain Hills. Shows are 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. General admission tickets are $20. Cave Creek Luminaria Run, Dec. 6

Hundreds of runners, joggers, walkers, families and friends participate in the run among lit luminarias in Cave Creek Regional Park. The event features a 5-K Run, a 1-mile fun run/walk and kids’ desert dashes. The first race begins at 4:45 p.m., and participants are encouraged to park at Cave Creek Memorial Rodeo Arena, 37201 N. 28th St., in Cave Creek. Registration fees range from $17 to $30. Holiday Pet Festival at WestWorld, Dec. 6

The free event by Tranquility Trail Animal Sanctuary showcases the latest in pet products and services and one-of-a-kind arts and crafts that can be gifts for pet-loving friends. Pets can pose for a picture with Santa. The festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at WestWorld, 16601 N. Pima Road, Scottsdale. Details: holidaypetfestival.com.

Holiday Reindoggie Parade, Dec. 7

Mackie’s Parlour Pet Boutique Spa hosts its annual Reindoggie Parade from noon to 3 p.m. at The Shops at Gainey Village, 8787 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. Families and their dogs can dress up in their favorite holiday wear and parade around The Shops at Gainey Village. Santa Claus will be there to lead the parade. Refreshments and doggie treats will be served. The cost to enter is $10 per family. Prizes given. All proceeds go to The Arizona Humane Society. Details: mackiesparlour.com.

December Cowboy Christmas Children’s Program, Dec. 7

Cave Creek Museum presents its annual free Cowboy Christmas children’s program from 1 to 4 p.m. at the museum, 6140 E. Skyline Dr., Cave Creek. Activities include crafts and cookie-making. Gary Sprague and his mount Dusty entertain visitors at 2:30 p.m., with holiday poetry, stories, and songs. Reservations required at cavecreekmuseum.org.

Angel Romero, Dec. 12

Holiday Lights at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park, Dec. 12-Jan.3

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park turns into a winter wonderland on wheels Dec. 12 with a tree-lighting ceremony, entertainment and Santa visit. The opening night festivities begin at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12, but the holiday light show continues from 6:30 to 9 p.m. through Jan. 3. Carefree Christmas Festival, Dec.12-14

This three-day, two-night, holiday extravaganza is free and boasts an electric-light parade, live music and dance performances, fireworks, a gift market, and a pet parade. Held in the heart of Carefree, kids can enjoy a snow slide with real snow, a kiddie train and an appearance by Disney princesses. Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold, Dec. 16-21

Patti Hannon stars in the hit, one-nun “Sister’s Christmas Catechism: The Mystery of the Magi’s Gold” at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second St., Scottsdale. A Merri-Achi Christmas, Dec. 19

Hear Them Ring, Dec. 20-21

Chimes and jingles fill the halls of the Musical Instrument Museum with hand bells, steel pans and marimbas.
