Movember: Bands jam in Scottsdale for men’s health

The Rogue Bar in Scottsdale is hosting a benefit concert on Saturday night for a foundation that challenges men to grow mustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men’s health issues.

The Movember Show, so named for the Movember Foundation that will receive 100 percent of concert proceeds, will feature local acts Watch for Rocks, Sister Lip, The Upper Strata, Jonathan Sakas and Darkness Dear Boy.

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second-most common cancer diagnosis for men in the U.S., according to the Movember Foundation.

Men tend to avoid topics such as prostate and testicular cancer or mental-health issues because they can be uncomfortable to talk about, said Danny Foley, a member of indie-rock band Watch for Rocks.

The Movember movement has helped create awareness for the cause by doing something as simple as having facial hair in order to break the ice on a sensitive topic, Foley said.

“Our band is passionate about creating awareness for men’s health issues by doing something fun and facilitating discussion to promote health,” Foley said. “Our motivation comes from whether you are male or not, if you have a father, brother, grandfather, uncle, son, or husband, etc. It is important.”

All proceeds from the $5 cover charge and CD sales at the show will go to the Movember Foundation, which says it has raised more than $559 million and funded more than 800 programs in 21 countries.

“To date, 4 million mustaches have been grown worldwide,” according to the Movember Foundation’s website, “but we won’t stop growing as long as serious men’s health issues exist.”

Ted Organ, who plays guitar and sings for Darkness Dear Boy, said his three-piece band, like Watch for Rocks, was part of last year’s Movember show.

“We love all the bands and the venue,” Organ said. “It’s a good time.”

The Movember Show begins 8 p.m. Saturday at Rogue Bar, 423 N Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale. For more on the Movember Foundation, visit us.movember.com.
